Decembers Activities

Hello Everyone

Wow what a year its been here at Wordsworth House for activities.I must start off by saying a massive thankyou to everyone in the community in Swanage for giving up there free time over the festive period to come to our home and entertain our wonderful residents. We would like to thank the Swanage Girl Guides,The vicar of st Marys,The Emmanual Church,The May Day singers,The Swanage Town Band,The Swanage Disabled Club for all our transport through out the year,Di Castle,The Swanage School for your fab community Tea Party and The Lord Wimbourne pub in poole for accomodating us for our pub lunch and shopping trip.

We have had a very busy December here at Wordsworth with lots of festive activities aswell as a very popular trip to the pub followed by shopping in poole. The residents also enjoyed there annual Christmas lights trip which took us around Swanage,Corfe castle,Langton Matravers and a wild goose chase over in wool. The residents did a fabulous job making chocolate truffles while themselfs enjoying frothy hot chocolate and marshmallows as well as mince pies and mulled wine.I would also like to say a personal thankyou to all the my collegues who have helped out throught out 2017 with all the trips without you guys and many of you who do give up your precious days off we are not able to go to all the many different places which is such a very important part of life within a carehome to be able to take our residents out so Thankyou so much !!!

so with a new year upon us 2018 will bring in some exciting new activities aswell as a new adventure for myself which involves a dedicated dementia day.My hope is to be able to work more closely along side residents who have dementia to be able to unlock some memories and make there days a little bit more enjoyable.I also hope to be a first port of call for any families who may need some help and advice about dementia or just an ear to listen to them as we all know dementia is a very devastating disease and many families are unsure of where they can get some help and reasurance that they are doing everything possible for there loved ones.

Finally i hope you have all had a wonderful christmas and that 2018 is full of health and happiness to you all.

Take care from all the staff here at Wordsworth House.

Activities in November

Hi Everyone

November saw another busy month for activities here at Wordsworth House for our residents.November brings alot of memories for our residents with rememberance day so this year everyone was busy making poppies for the whole house which they all wore on rememberance sunday while watching the parade on tv.We also enjoyed handbag arts & crafts where they got to design there own cotton handbags and keep them. The call to mind game also proved to be a great social game this month as it always brings together residents both with and without dementia who were able to interact with lots of stories of days gone by.

One of the new activities we tried this month which was requested by one of our residents was woodwork. This activity worked really well as our resident was a carpenter and doing this activity took him back to his younger working years which was fantastic to see him able to sand down the wood and make his own block i have to say he really did enjoy his afternoon. As we know November is children in need and we all had fun with a fabulous selfie day with pudsey bear as well as a cake sale to raise money for children in need well done everyone what bought cakes!!!

Sadly we have to say goodbye to Georgie our pet therapy dog who has now gone into retirement.Thankyou Liz for bringing Georgie who brought so much joy to our residents and really did make a difference.I hope you are all looking forward to christmas i know we are here with lots of activities and trips planned for December so untill next month we wish you all a very merry Christmas and happy shopping.

Take care from all the staff here at Wordsworth House.

Octobers Activities

Hi Everyone

Another month has passed us by so quickly and again our residents have being busy here at Wordsworth House with various activities.A popular activity is always the drawing room lunches were some residents are able to enjoy lunch in the drawing room listening to music followed by a group activity. These lunches are good for social interacion especially for our new residents who can feel over whelmed and it helps them to get to know other residents and staff in a smaller enviroment. We enjoyed poetry with Di Castle after our lunch which again is a great way to get residents to interact socially and relax.

October as we know is halloween and this year our residents had a fantastic day pumpkin carving, dressing up along with the staff and we had in for the first time Music from Mr Dave Marshell. We would like to say a big thankyou to Dave as our residents really did enjoy his music and had a great afternoon.Once again our residents enjoyed there usual monthly activities including baking, memories from yester year, pamper & polish, floor games and arts and crafts.

Activities within our carehome are person centered and when i plan the calender it is planned around each individual resident so that it gives everyone a chance to be able to do something they wish. However not everyone likes to do activities so it is also important that as activity co-ordinators we are able to do one to one visits either socially or within the residents rooms as this helps to prevent social inclusion.

November has a busy activity calender and i look forward to letting you know what we have being up to.So until then take care.

From all the staff here at Wordsworth House.

With christmas fast approaching it is now time to find out what our residents would like to do over christmas and start planning the calender for December. The poole pub and christmas shopping trip has been voted in as the most popular with the christmas lights trip coming in next.As ever our residents always enjoy a varied activity programme here at Wordsworth House and it is always a pleasure to go home knowing we have made someones day and brough some sunshine into the house leaving the winter blues outside so until next month.

Poole Harbour boat trip

I just thought i would write a little blog about our boat trip around poole and brownsea island.I had arranged way back in March this boat trip which is run by friends of dolphin which is a voluntry run boat especially for wheelchairs and anyone with disabilities who would find it hard to board a normal standard boat. The crew met us and were all so very friendly and helpful and assisted all our residents and staff safely onto the boat.We were offered tea and coffee which was a great accompliment to our homemade picnic we took with us.The trip lasted 2 hours sailing around poole and taking in all the sights of brownsea island and old harry rocks. We all enjoyed such a great day made better by the sun shine and calm waters so no sea sickness for our activities co-ordinator.I would highly recommend the friends of dolphin which runs from March to september and runs a choice of 2 trips poole harbour and wareham quay where you can enjoy a fish and chip lunch on board the boat. The trips do get booked up very quickly so early booking is essential as i booked as soon as they opened in March and was lucky to get a spot.

So on behalf of the residents and staff who went on this trip a massive thankyou such a great service which gives pleasure to so many people.

I hope you have been enjoying the sunshine while its lasted i know our wonderful residents here at Wordsworth House have been able to get out in the garden enjoying breakfast, social mornings, pamper and polish and general coffee, teas and a good old chat.June has been a great month for enjoying ice creams as well as flower arranging, floor games and baking cup cakes for cup cake day which was on the 15th June.We love baking as our motto here at Wordsworth is make it bake it eat it.

We must say thankyou to the Reverend Andy and Brigette who give up there free time once a month to come up to Wordsworth to do our monthly church service as many of our residents are religious and it is important to be able to include spiritual and religious awareness within the home.

We have another full calender of activities in July including the long awaited poole harbour boat trip this  is a volunteer run boat which is adapted for wheelchairs and is free of charge so i will be looking forward to letting you know how we got on sailing the high seas.We are also looking forward to a trip to swanage railway to sample the buffet cart for morning coffee.I hope you enjoy reading about the activities our residents do as theses are chosen by our residents as part of our person centred care here at Wordsworth House.

I would also just like to mention that i will be taking on a new adventure here at Wordsworth House which is to become a dementia locksmith. The role of the locksmith is to work along side residents and there families and to try and unlock as many memories as possible to enable us to person centre there care and activities even more by doing this we are able to find out certain trigger points which will help us to see why they may like to do certain things at certain times of the day by identifying certain behaviours we are then able to alleviate agitation, stress and therefore allow them to enjoy a good quality of life.

So until next month enjoy the summer sun and take care
