Activities in June our Blog !!!

Hi and another very warm welcome from us all here at Wordsworth House.

June has not only given us great weather but our residents have enjoyed there much awaited activity the Poole Harbour Boat Trip.We were again blessed with great weather on the day and together enjoyed a 2 hour trip around Poole Harbour whilst eating our home made picnic lunch and enjoying tea and biscuits along with a good old sing along with the crew also joining in with us.The friends of dolphin crew not only made us feel welcomed but also did a great safety brief before we set sail so we knew we were in safe hands.

June also saw the start of the world cup much to the delight of our gentlemen and they all enjoyed the opening match along with a few beers and nibbles to help cheer them along. The icecream social went down well as ever especially in this heat and we all enjoyed cones and lollies with plenty more to come.Once again we were able to make a couple of visits to the All Things Bright And Beautiful service held weekly at our local church St Marys in Swanage. This trip is not only popular amongst the residents but it is valuable to being part of the community and the fact that it is dementia friendly makes all the difference.I have seen a great change in the residents who we take to the church and not only does it make them feel part of the community but they are happy and feel valued.

We would once again like to say thankyou to our local vicar John who along with Brigette give up there free time to come and do a hymn service once a month here at Wordsworth and i know it is well received and it is also important that the religious views of our residents is taken into account. We also enjoyed entertainment from Dave Marshall which showed the movers and groovers in the house. We did hold a cake sale with all proceeds going towards the Wordsworth House residents mini bus fund and the total is steadily rising which is fabulous thankyou to everyone who has so far donated.

So has summer finally kicks in we are all looking forward to getting out more in the garden for activities and this year Wordsworth House will be part of the Swanage carnival parade so please look out for us and donate into our bucket every little helps and it all goes towards our mini bus.

Have a lovely summer and i will look forward to our next blog in August

Take care

Activities in May

Hello everyone

Its that time of month again to update you with whats been going on here at Wordsworth House in activities.May has produced some decent weather which has been good as we have had our 1st big trip out to Haskins garden centre. This destination was our residents choice and they had a good day enjoying all the plants and flowers as well as the shop and a spot of lunch in the restaurant. We would like to thank the restaurant manager at Haskins for accommodating us in there ceder room as they were exceptionally busy but they went out of there way to find us somewhere we could all be together.

May also found our residents doing life skills which has been a really interesting activity as it helps to see what they did when they were in there own home as well what they are able to do now.Life skills also enables our residents to do things in the home such as dusting, laundry and the best one so far sock pairing who would have thought you can have so much fun with socks.

We were able to finally clear the vegetable patch ready for replanting so we can all eat our home grown vegetables and potatoes lovely. We also made our first visit to the all things bright and beautiful church service at St Marys church in Swanage. This is a new weekly group for anyone in the Swanage community who would like to take a loved one for a small service followed by tea and cake and activities. The group is particularly suitable for those with dementia and runs on a Tuesday from 2.30pm please note no group on June 5th.

We have also done our usual monthly activities which our residents look forward to such as arts & crafts and horseracing aswell as a quiz or 2 this month.June is looking good for activities especially the Poole Harbour boat trip which is making a return for the second year due to popular demand so i look forward to letting you know how it was.I hope we will continue to have some more sun as it is always good to get our residents out even in the garden for lunch or activities so until next month enjoy the good old British weather.

Aprils Activities at Wordsworth House

Hello

Its that time again when you get to read what our wonderful residents have been up to again here at Wordsworth House.April has been a good month here at Wordsworth as we took part in the national care homes open day which was a great success. We started planning for our open day in January and together as a team we made sure all our residents and their families and everyone who came to visit had a great day.Everyone was treated to a fabulous buffet and a massive thank you goes out to all the kitchen staff who worked so hard to produce the most amazing food.We also had entertainment from the fabulous Karl Latimer  who i would highly recommend if you want a jolly good singalong.we were also joined by Lesley and her miniature ponies Harvey and Stan as well as the Deputy Mayor of Swanage Mrs Gail Green and the duo Dave Marshal and Anne. I would like to say what a fabulous team we have here at Wordsworth House and every department worked so very hard to make it a success despite the downfall of rain this didn’t dampen our spirits.

April also saw our residents decorating cakes for St Georges Day as well as the ever popular balloon tennis, dominoes in which i was taught how to play by one of our residents and for national beer day we made beer cupcakes as well as trying beers from different parts of the country.Dedicated Dementia Day is still running on a Tuesday and we are looking forward to taking some of our residents to St Marys Church in Swanage to a new group which is part of the community where every Tuesday there will be a service held which is particularly suitable for those living with Dementia and involves activities and refreshments so we are looking forward to our first visit. As always i would like to thank Di Castle for coming to do her monthly poetry classes free of charge and our local vicar from St Marys Church John.

Thankyou for reading our blog until May take care

from all at Wordsworth House.

Activities in March

Hello

March has been and gone and our residents here at Wordsworth House have had a busy Activities calendar. We celebtated St Patricks Day with homemade very tasty Irish coffees which went down a treat.March was also Nutrition and Hydration week and to coincide with this the Activities team challenged the Kitchen to the Great British Blend Off where with the help of our residents it was down to them to choose the winning smoothy.Lucy (Activities) and Dario (kitchen)had to produce a smoothy with random ingredients i had  bought and our residents did the taste test the result was close but eventually we had a winner and i am pleased to say it was Lucy and the Activities team that won. This was a great afternoon which was lots of fun that not only involved  other departments at Wordsworth House but also showed awareness for Hydration and Nutrition and Swallowing Awareness Day.

We would like to say Thankyou to Di Castle who again gave up her free time to do the monthly poetry club and Our local vicar John who comes every month to do our Hymn Service and Holy Communion.

We had lots of fun making easter baskets and easter bonnets as well as easter chocolate cakes.Mothers day was celebrated with our residents sharing memories of there mums which then we used to make our mothers day memory tree.

We are looking forward to April where we hope you will come along to our care homes open day. This is a national event and we are open to everyone from 12.30pm to 5pm with a buffet and entertainment throughout the day we do hope you can pop in and see us.Activities are looking good for may with trips out as the weather is now starting to pick up and i know our residents are looking forward to ever popular Boat trip and the Haskins trip so until next month.

ACTIVITIES IN FEBRUARY 2018

Hello

Its blog time again and what a lovely February our residents have had.We have been busy tossing pancakes along with our chef Darrio who kindly came and made them while Lucy & Myself along with our home manager Erin engaged in a pancake tossing competion which was great fun.We also had our residents tossing pancakes as well as enjoying them for a well desearved afternoon treat with lots of delicious toppings.

February was also the month of love and what better way to spend valentines day than with a High Tea and musical entertainment provided by Mr Dave Arnold. We all had a wonderful afternoon with plenty of cake and bucks fizz Thanks Dave for a great afternoon.Residents also engaged in various other activities and they are now preparing to get there vegetable plot growing with potatoes already on the go.

The dedicated Dementia day is also going well and i am finding it both interesting and rewarding in that we are able to find out why people with dementia do certain things and what triggers certain memories and alot of it stems back to there working lives or even there childhood.Hopefully the sun will start shining upon us soon as we already have our first trip booked in to Haskins Garden Centre. This trip was voted by our residents and is proving so popular we may have to run it twice. The calender is now underway for April and we are all looking forward to the National Carehomes Open Day on Saturday the 21st.

I hope you have enjoyed reading our blog and getting an insight into some of the activities our residents enjoy here at Wordsworth House. The activities are choosen by our residents with all there individual needs met and person centred as much as is possible.

So untill next month take care

Tracie & lucy

NEW YEAR NEW ACTIVITIES JANUARY 2018

Hello everyone

Firstly we would like to wish everyone a very happy new year and i hope it has got off to a good start.January 2018 saw the start of our new memory locksmith programme where by one to one time is spent with every resident who has dementia and together we fill in a enrichment profile which will hopefully unlock some memories of the resident this in turn will help to person centre there day even more and find trigger points that may help us realise why they behave in certain ways. The dedicated programme focuses on there past life history as well as where they are today and can help to eleviate aggitation and stress so far the programme is going well and once all the profiles have been completed then we are able to focus on group activities.

January has been a bit  chilli so our residents have been busy baking and made a lovely rocky road along with Lucy i have to say i did sample it and it was lovely. We also enjoyed table top dominos which is great for maths and brain training along with balloon table tennis which helps to excercise the upper limbs. We must say thankyou to Di Castle for giving up her time to come in and do our monthly poetry club.We would also like to welcome our new vicar John who comes into Wordsworth House once a month to do a hymn service and holy communion should anyone like it.

February has a busy activities calender with a high tea for valentines day with entertainment provided by Mr Dave Arnold. We will also be tossing our own pancakes and baking valentines biscuits with love.

I hope you all have a good month and wrap up and stay warm untill next time.

Take Care

Decembers Activities

Hello Everyone

Wow what a year its been here at Wordsworth House for activities.I must start off by saying a massive thankyou to everyone in the community in Swanage for giving up there free time over the festive period to come to our home and entertain our wonderful residents. We would like to thank the Swanage Girl Guides,The vicar of st Marys,The Emmanual Church,The May Day singers,The Swanage Town Band,The Swanage Disabled Club for all our transport through out the year,Di Castle,The Swanage School for your fab community Tea Party and The Lord Wimbourne pub in poole for accomodating us for our pub lunch and shopping trip.

We have had a very busy December here at Wordsworth with lots of festive activities aswell as a very popular trip to the pub followed by shopping in poole. The residents also enjoyed there annual Christmas lights trip which took us around Swanage,Corfe castle,Langton Matravers and a wild goose chase over in wool. The residents did a fabulous job making chocolate truffles while themselfs enjoying frothy hot chocolate and marshmallows as well as mince pies and mulled wine.I would also like to say a personal thankyou to all the my collegues who have helped out throught out 2017 with all the trips without you guys and many of you who do give up your precious days off we are not able to go to all the many different places which is such a very important part of life within a carehome to be able to take our residents out so Thankyou so much !!!

so with a new year upon us 2018 will bring in some exciting new activities aswell as a new adventure for myself which involves a dedicated dementia day.My hope is to be able to work more closely along side residents who have dementia to be able to unlock some memories and make there days a little bit more enjoyable.I also hope to be a first port of call for any families who may need some help and advice about dementia or just an ear to listen to them as we all know dementia is a very devastating disease and many families are unsure of where they can get some help and reasurance that they are doing everything possible for there loved ones.

Finally i hope you have all had a wonderful christmas and that 2018 is full of health and happiness to you all.

Take care from all the staff here at Wordsworth House.

Activities in November

Hi Everyone

November saw another busy month for activities here at Wordsworth House for our residents.November brings alot of memories for our residents with rememberance day so this year everyone was busy making poppies for the whole house which they all wore on rememberance sunday while watching the parade on tv.We also enjoyed handbag arts & crafts where they got to design there own cotton handbags and keep them. The call to mind game also proved to be a great social game this month as it always brings together residents both with and without dementia who were able to interact with lots of stories of days gone by.

One of the new activities we tried this month which was requested by one of our residents was woodwork. This activity worked really well as our resident was a carpenter and doing this activity took him back to his younger working years which was fantastic to see him able to sand down the wood and make his own block i have to say he really did enjoy his afternoon. As we know November is children in need and we all had fun with a fabulous selfie day with pudsey bear as well as a cake sale to raise money for children in need well done everyone what bought cakes!!!

Sadly we have to say goodbye to Georgie our pet therapy dog who has now gone into retirement.Thankyou Liz for bringing Georgie who brought so much joy to our residents and really did make a difference.I hope you are all looking forward to christmas i know we are here with lots of activities and trips planned for December so untill next month we wish you all a very merry Christmas and happy shopping.

Take care from all the staff here at Wordsworth House.

Octobers Activities

Hi Everyone

Another month has passed us by so quickly and again our residents have being busy here at Wordsworth House with various activities.A popular activity is always the drawing room lunches were some residents are able to enjoy lunch in the drawing room listening to music followed by a group activity. These lunches are good for social interacion especially for our new residents who can feel over whelmed and it helps them to get to know other residents and staff in a smaller enviroment. We enjoyed poetry with Di Castle after our lunch which again is a great way to get residents to interact socially and relax.

October as we know is halloween and this year our residents had a fantastic day pumpkin carving, dressing up along with the staff and we had in for the first time Music from Mr Dave Marshell. We would like to say a big thankyou to Dave as our residents really did enjoy his music and had a great afternoon.Once again our residents enjoyed there usual monthly activities including baking, memories from yester year, pamper & polish, floor games and arts and crafts.

Activities within our carehome are person centered and when i plan the calender it is planned around each individual resident so that it gives everyone a chance to be able to do something they wish. However not everyone likes to do activities so it is also important that as activity co-ordinators we are able to do one to one visits either socially or within the residents rooms as this helps to prevent social inclusion.

November has a busy activity calender and i look forward to letting you know what we have being up to.So until then take care.
