I hope you are all enjoying the summer sun and making the most of the outdoors i know we all are here at Wordsworth House. We have had some new activities this month including giant dominos and swing ball which went down a treat.Swing ball and giant tennis were played in the garden to coinside with wimbledon and was so popular both activities have been requested again. We also had a fantastic boat trip to poole harbour sailing around Brownsea and old harry rocks. The trip was on board a specially designed boat for wheelchairs and is run by friends of dolphin please see my seperate blog.
July also saw a return visit from Magdalena and her interactive musical workshop which was fantastic as it engaged lots of residents especially our residents with dementia.Once Magdalena had finished her workshop we all enjoyed a strawberry cream tea with fresh strawberries.
Residents also enjoyed a curry night all washed down with a beer as well as naan breads and accompliments. We also enjoyed all our usual activities like arts & crafts, musical bingo, sensory call to mind and pamper and polish.August is looking like a pretty full calender for activities so untill next month enjoy the summer and take care.
From all at Wordsworth House
I just thought i would write a little blog about our boat trip around poole and brownsea island.I had arranged way back in March this boat trip which is run by friends of dolphin which is a voluntry run boat especially for wheelchairs and anyone with disabilities who would find it hard to board a normal standard boat. The crew met us and were all so very friendly and helpful and assisted all our residents and staff safely onto the boat.We were offered tea and coffee which was a great accompliment to our homemade picnic we took with us.The trip lasted 2 hours sailing around poole and taking in all the sights of brownsea island and old harry rocks. We all enjoyed such a great day made better by the sun shine and calm waters so no sea sickness for our activities co-ordinator.I would highly recommend the friends of dolphin which runs from March to september and runs a choice of 2 trips poole harbour and wareham quay where you can enjoy a fish and chip lunch on board the boat. The trips do get booked up very quickly so early booking is essential as i booked as soon as they opened in March and was lucky to get a spot.
So on behalf of the residents and staff who went on this trip a massive thankyou such a great service which gives pleasure to so many people.
I hope you have been enjoying the sunshine while its lasted i know our wonderful residents here at Wordsworth House have been able to get out in the garden enjoying breakfast, social mornings, pamper and polish and general coffee, teas and a good old chat.June has been a great month for enjoying ice creams as well as flower arranging, floor games and baking cup cakes for cup cake day which was on the 15th June.We love baking as our motto here at Wordsworth is make it bake it eat it.
We must say thankyou to the Reverend Andy and Brigette who give up there free time once a month to come up to Wordsworth to do our monthly church service as many of our residents are religious and it is important to be able to include spiritual and religious awareness within the home.
We have another full calender of activities in July including the long awaited poole harbour boat trip this is a volunteer run boat which is adapted for wheelchairs and is free of charge so i will be looking forward to letting you know how we got on sailing the high seas.We are also looking forward to a trip to swanage railway to sample the buffet cart for morning coffee.I hope you enjoy reading about the activities our residents do as theses are chosen by our residents as part of our person centred care here at Wordsworth House.
I would also just like to mention that i will be taking on a new adventure here at Wordsworth House which is to become a dementia locksmith. The role of the locksmith is to work along side residents and there families and to try and unlock as many memories as possible to enable us to person centre there care and activities even more by doing this we are able to find out certain trigger points which will help us to see why they may like to do certain things at certain times of the day by identifying certain behaviours we are then able to alleviate agitation, stress and therefore allow them to enjoy a good quality of life.
So until next month enjoy the summer sun and take care
Well for a short month its been a busy for activities here at Wordsworth House. We celebrated chinese new years with a wonderful chinese buffet lunch as well as valentines day with a wonderful afternoon of hearts, flowers and chocolates with entertainment provided by the lovely Karen G.
Activities also had a wonderful ladies who lunch afternoon followed by call to mind a great game i would recommend to any carehome/nursing home.Call to mind is a game designed for dementia but i have found it works across the board.Call to mind is a creative talking tool and is fabulous for reminiscence and social interaction. We also celebrated pizza day with our residents making there own and enjoying the fruits of there labour.
Wordsworth House have been asked by Charlie Dooley and her team if we would like to take part in a project that is to benefit the whole community of Swanage.Charlie is currently in the middle of writing a big heritage lottery funding project to revamp woodland and cliff top trails by Durlston Castle. The development project is testing out some mini pilot projects and our residents trailed there first one here at Wordsworth in February.Together with Charlie we ran an activities afternoon which involved indoor gardening and bird box making. The session went down a storm and we are looking forward to the next one as well as some sunny weather so we can take our residents to Durlston to participate in the outdoor activities and the mindfulness walks. This project not only involves bringing carehomes into the community but is dementia friendly which is fabulous. We have had lots of laughs and lots of fun here in activities as we always do and heres to many more.
Take care until next time.
