Hello! Welcome to the Wordsworth House activity blog for June 2019.
In another busy month here at Wordsworth House, the activities team have been keen to make good use of the improved weather in order to get residents out and about in the local area, enjoying all opportunities to appreciate the beautiful place in which we live.
We were very fortunate to be invited to use the Swanage Dementia Friendly Beach Hut down on the sea front, where we enjoyed ice creams and cups of tea during a blissful few hours of people watching. The memories of happy days spent at the beach in times gone by were shared between residents and staff, stories of ice creams and sandcastles, knitted swimming costumes and sunny family trips. Perfect weather topped off the afternoon as we were able to enjoy the change of scene and a summer breeze. We are grateful to the Dementia Friendly group for giving us this opportunity, we will definitely be back.
Another of our recent outdoors trips was slightly closer to home but equally enjoyable. We ventured onto the ‘Downs’ where we enjoyed a smashing picnic and chatted amongst ourselves and to passing walkers. We were able to take in the view of the entire bay from Swanage to Bournemouth and speculated on where the boats might be going. It was lovely to sit back and relax in the warm sunshine enjoying the peace and quiet.
In between ice cream trips, we have also been out to visit another of the local Care Homes that had invited us to share in their Open Day. It was good to be invited to attend, and we look forward to returning the invitation to our own Open Day in July.
Residents have been making their own bread rolls in the monthly ‘Make it, bake it, eat it’ session, as well as taking part in a spot of cake decorating as part of the Life Skills activities.
Arts and crafts, scarf dancing, bird feeders in the garden and pamper and polish sessions have all been well accessed as part of our very busy activities timetable, designed to keep minds and bodies active.
We are grateful to our local vicar, John from St Mary’s church in Swanage, who along with Bridgette, calls in to deliver a hymn service once a month. The lounge rings with the sounds of resident’s favourite hymns in this much enjoyed session.
As our awareness and understanding of dementia and its effects on individuals increases, we know how important it is to encourage individuals to participate in activities that can not only develop socialisation but also engages residents in being active; stimulating both physical and mental senses.
We are very pleased that Philippa Topham, a talented professional musician, comes into Wordsworth to provide a popular hour of Singing for Fun and Singing for the Brain on a regular basis. Phillipa uses her talents to encourage us to participate in a session full of music and enjoyment. Residents have thoroughly enjoyed sharing songs and rhymes incorporating singing, clapping and memory skills. Staff have remarked that this is such a positive session and residents really do appear to be proud of their achievements.
The calendar for July is looking equally busy and activities we are looking forward to include the Poole Harbour Boat trip, Jolly Boys outing and our summer Rock and Roll themed barbeque and Open Day. Remember to keep hydrated and enjoy the sunshine.
From all everyone here at Wordsworth House.
