As usual, this month has been full of activity, with Wordsworth residents enjoying trips out to the Dementia Friendly church visit and a fabulous lunch trip to Swanage’s Harry Ramsdens restaurant in the town. We also enjoyed an ice-cream on the sea front. Perfect.
Back at Wordsworth we have also been thoroughly entertained, enjoying our regular monthly visit from Simon of ‘Brighter Days’, who as a motivational entertainer, encourages resident participation with a wide range of engaging activities. These sessions are good fun and can involve physical floor games, quizzes and puppetry.
We also had an exceptionally good session this month, with Phillipa from ‘Singing for the brain’ and ‘Singing for fun’. There was a great deal of participation in the drawing room for this session and we even managed to sing in ‘rounds’, which takes a lot of concentration. It was a really lovely afternoon with lots of smiles, laughter and applause.
Tuesdays continue to be our Dedicated Dementia days and the ‘introduction to life skills’ has been very successful, as we use this time to engage residents in everyday tasks that would have been familiar to them in their own homes. Tasks have included vacuuming, dusting and washing up. This type of task can invoke long forgotten memories and one of the residents spontaneously joined in with washing up and chatting about her younger life bringing up her family, and some of the happy memories that this simple act triggered.
Other in-house activities have included balloon tennis, pamper and polish sessions, group scrabble, flower arranging, darts and chair yoga as chosen by residents.
Easter fell in April this year, and of course we celebrated traditionally with chocolate eggs and a delicious lunch.
Wordsworth House has been resplendent with Spring flowers from our flower arranging group and the gardens are beginning to burst into life.
We have plenty of activities planned for May and hope that the weather will be warming up to enable us to get out into the gardens more. We also have plans for shopping trips and even a Zumba class. Watch this space.
We hope that you have enjoyed reading about some of the ways Wordsworth House residents enjoy spending their time here and we look forward to more sunny days and happy memories.
From all of the staff at Wordsworth House.
